SMILE pro refers to SMILE treatment using ZEISS's newer VISUMAX 800 platform and software. It is not a separate promise of better vision for every patient. The platform changes parts of the laser workflow; a safe recommendation still depends on your prescription, corneal measurements, eye health, and the surgeon's assessment.
Start with our SMILE procedure page for the operation itself. This guide explains the technology wording you may see while comparing Dallas-Fort Worth clinics.
Is SMILE pro a new 2026 procedure?
No. ZEISS announced U.S. FDA approval of VISUMAX 800 with SMILE pro software in January 2024 for nearsightedness with or without astigmatism. Seeing a fresh advertisement does not make the original approval new.
Ask which laser model and software a clinic actually uses. A generic SMILE description, a manufacturer photograph, or an article about newer technology is not proof that a particular practice owns that platform. This comparison does not establish that Visionary uses VISUMAX 800.
What changes with the newer platform?
The manufacturer describes faster lenticule creation and additional alignment and workflow tools. That is information about part of the operation, not a head-to-head guarantee of a better personal outcome.
Laser time is only one component of care. Screening, preparation, the surgical steps, postoperative checks, and management of an unexpected problem still matter. When comparing claims, ask whether a quoted time means laser delivery, the procedure, or the entire visit. These are different measures.
Does faster laser treatment change who qualifies?
Do not assume so. A faster platform does not make an unsuitable cornea suitable or remove the need to assess the tear film. The approved indication and treatment range must be checked for the exact device and software being proposed.
Bring your actual prescription and ask to see the findings that support the recommendation. A patient can be ineligible for a branded treatment even when it sounds less invasive than another option. Our SMILE candidacy guide addresses those measurements rather than the platform name.
What should you compare besides the brand?
Ask who performs the assessment and operation, how follow-up is arranged, which risks apply to your eyes, and what happens if vision does not meet the intended target. Request a written explanation of any enhancement policy rather than assuming every future correction is included.
For a DFW patient traveling to Plano, accessibility of follow-up is a practical comparison point. Ask where early checks take place and whom to contact after hours. A convenient operation date matters less if the follow-up plan is unclear.
What is the useful next step?
At a consultation, ask why the proposed technique fits your measurements better than reasonable alternatives, including continued glasses or contacts. Ask for the patient information specific to the platform before consenting.
A technology comparison is useful when it makes the recommendation clearer. It is less useful when it reduces the decision to newest versus oldest or counts seconds while ignoring eligibility, visual priorities, and ongoing care.
