VISIONARY EYE
LENS-BASED

Custom Lens Replacement. For people ready to stop chasing readers.

Custom Lens Replacement, also called refractive lens exchange, RLE, or clear lens replacement, replaces the eye's aging natural lens with a premium intraocular lens chosen for your life. For many Plano patients over 40, it is a presbyopia correction option that can correct distance, intermediate, near, and astigmatism in one permanent procedure - and prevents future cataracts in that eye.

How it works

How Custom Lens Replacement works.

  1. 01Step 01

Measure your eye and choose the lens

    Biometry

CLR begins with precise biometry - detailed measurements of your eye's length, curvature, and optics. Together with how you actually use your vision (reading, screens, driving, golf), these measurements determine which premium intraocular lens (IOL) - extended-depth-of-focus, multifocal, or toric - is right for you.

  2. 02Step 02

    Create a micro-incision

    No stitches

On surgery day, numbing drops keep you fully comfortable. Your surgeon makes a tiny self-sealing incision at the edge of the cornea - small enough that no stitches are needed - to access the natural lens.

  3. 03Step 03

    Remove the natural lens

    Ultrasound

Using gentle ultrasound energy (phacoemulsification), the aging natural lens is softened and removed through the micro-incision, while the clear capsule that holds it is left in place to support the new lens. Because the natural lens is gone for good, you can never develop cataracts in that eye.

  4. 04Step 04

    Implant your premium IOL

    Permanent

The custom-selected IOL is folded, inserted through the same tiny incision, and unfolds precisely into position. It corrects distance, intermediate, and near vision - and unlike the natural lens, it never ages, stiffens, or clouds. Most patients see clearly within 24 hours.

FAQ

Quick answers.

More questions? Call 214-972-2020 or book a free visit.

  • Is CLR the same as RLE?
Yes. Custom Lens Replacement, Refractive Lens Exchange, and clear lens replacement all describe the same core idea: replacing the natural lens with an intraocular lens to reduce dependence on glasses.
  • Is RLE the same as cataract surgery?
It uses the same surgical technique, but the timing is different. RLE is elective lens replacement before cataracts are visually significant. Cataract surgery is performed when the clouded lens is already affecting daily life.
  • Will I be free of glasses after CLR?
Most patients dramatically reduce or eliminate glasses dependence. Premium multifocal IOLs offer the best chance of being completely glasses-free; monofocal options give crisp distance with reading glasses for near tasks.
  • How does CLR compare to LASIK?
LASIK reshapes the cornea and works best for younger patients with healthy lenses. CLR replaces the lens itself - the better answer for ages 40+, high prescriptions, or early lens changes.
  • Can RLE correct astigmatism?
Yes. Toric IOLs can correct astigmatism during RLE, and multifocal or extended-depth lenses can be selected when the goal is a wider range of vision.
  • Are there risks?
CLR is among the most refined intraocular procedures in modern medicine, but every surgery has risks. Dr. Shehz reviews them in detail at your consultation, including the rare ones.
  • How much does CLR cost?
Pricing depends on which IOL technology fits your eyes. See our Affordability page for full payment options including FSA/HSA and financing.
  • Am I a candidate for RLE in Plano?
RLE candidacy usually starts with age 40+, presbyopia or reading-glasses dependence, high prescription, early lens changes, and healthy retina status. The exam confirms whether clear lens replacement, LASIK, EVO ICL, or cataract surgery is the better path.
  • Can multifocal IOLs help me stop wearing glasses?
Multifocal and extended-depth IOLs can greatly reduce dependence on readers and distance glasses for the right eyes. We also evaluate toric IOLs when astigmatism correction is part of the goal.
