Overview

A lens implant you can fine-tune after it heals.

With a standard intraocular lens, the lens power is chosen before surgery from measurements of your eye. Those measurements are very good, but healing can shift the final result slightly, and eyes that have had LASIK, PRK, or RK are harder to measure precisely.

The Light Adjustable Lens is made from a light-sensitive material. After surgery and initial healing, a special UV light delivery device reshapes the lens in the office to correct residual nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism. You live with each adjustment between visits, and once you and your surgeon agree on the result, a final treatment locks the lens so it no longer changes.

    Measure the eye and plan the lens

    Biometry

    We measure your eye's length, curvature, and optics, and review how you use your vision day to day. The exam also confirms your pupils dilate well enough for light treatments and that your retina and cornea suit the lens.

  2. 02Step 02

    Implant the lens

    Surgery day

    The cloudy or aging natural lens is removed through a small incision and the Light Adjustable Lens is placed in the lens capsule, the same way as other intraocular lenses.

  3. 03Step 03

    Heal and protect from UV

    UV glasses

    You wear the UV-protective glasses we provide during waking hours from surgery until the final lock-in, so daylight does not change the lens before your surgeon does.

    Adjust, preview, and lock in

    In-office

  • What is the Light Adjustable Lens?
    The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is an intraocular lens made from a light-sensitive material. After cataract or lens surgery and initial healing, its power can be adjusted in the office with a UV light delivery device, then locked in once the vision is right.
  • How is it different from other premium lenses?
    Monofocal, toric, EDOF, and multifocal lenses have a fixed power chosen from measurements before surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens is also chosen from those measurements, but its power can still be refined after healing, which can help when measurements are less predictable.
  • Is the Light Adjustable Lens good after LASIK or PRK?
    It is often discussed for eyes with previous LASIK, PRK, or RK, because prior corneal surgery makes standard lens calculations less predictable. Being able to refine the power after healing can help close that gap. Your exam confirms whether it fits your eyes.
  • How many light treatments will I need?
    It varies. Adjustments usually begin a few weeks after surgery, and most patients have a small number of short adjustment and lock-in treatments. Your surgeon plans the schedule around how your eye heals and what you notice between visits.
  • Why do I need to wear UV glasses?
    Until the lens is locked in, ultraviolet light, including sunlight, could change it. The UV-protective glasses we provide are worn during waking hours from surgery until the final lock-in treatment.
  • Will I be free of glasses after the Light Adjustable Lens?
    The goal is to reduce dependence on glasses for the distances you choose, and blended-vision targets can be discussed. No lens guarantees complete freedom from glasses, and reading glasses may still be needed for some tasks.
  • Are there risks?
    Lens implant surgery carries risks including infection, inflammation, pressure changes, retinal problems, glare or halos, residual prescription, and the need for another procedure. The light treatments add their own requirements, including dilation and strict UV protection until lock-in. We review these with you before deciding.
  • Does insurance cover the Light Adjustable Lens?
    Medically necessary cataract surgery with a standard monofocal lens is typically covered by Medicare and most insurance. The Light Adjustable Lens is a premium upgrade that is typically out of pocket. We verify your benefits and put every cost in writing before anything is scheduled.
