What to Bring to an RLE Consultation

Prepare for an RLE consultation in Plano with records, visual goals, lens questions, and a follow-up plan for patients traveling from across DFW.

What to Bring to an RLE Consultation

The most useful thing to bring to an RLE consultation is a clear description of what you want to do with your vision. "I want fewer glasses" is a starting point. "I need to read a monitor all day and drive home after dark" gives the surgeon a more useful decision to discuss.

For Dallas-Fort Worth patients considering refractive lens exchange, the consultation should connect those goals with examination findings, alternatives, lens tradeoffs, and aftercare. This checklist is about preparing for that visit; our separate RLE candidacy guide covers the general suitability questions.

Bring records that explain your starting point

Collect your current glasses, recent prescriptions, medication list, and information about previous eye treatments. Include LASIK, PRK, retinal procedures, glaucoma treatment, and any prior lens implant. If you have older corneal measurements or a surgical report, ask how to send them before the appointment.

Prior laser correction can affect lens calculations. Missing records do not automatically prevent surgery, but telling the team early allows them to plan the evaluation. Do not assume another office's records have transferred because a referral was sent.

Contact-lens wear can affect measurements. Request instructions for your lens type before traveling; the team may need repeat measurements if the surface is unstable. The contact-lens preparation guide explains why this matters.

Write a one-page vision brief

Choose three daily tasks you most want to improve and one compromise you would find unacceptable. The list below is a practical worksheet, not a test that selects an implant.

Bring an example Question it helps answer
Reading distance for a phone, book, or hobby How much near vision do you need?
Monitor position and work hours Is intermediate vision a priority?
Frequency of nighttime driving How important are low-light visual quality and glare tolerance?
Current use of readers Which glasses would you still be willing to use?
Past monovision experience Have unequal distance targets been comfortable?

For example, someone in Addison who drives for work may prioritize a different optical tradeoff from someone in Frisco who mainly reads and gardens. Neither city determines the lens. The specific task does.

Ask what the examination is checking

Lens planning can involve refraction, corneal shape and power, eye length, lens clarity, eye pressure, and retinal health. Ask what each finding changes about the recommendation. If the surface needs treatment before measurements can be trusted, a second testing visit may be a useful part of planning.

Ask the surgeon to distinguish a refractive goal from a medical problem. An implant cannot be expected to correct every reason for reduced vision. Cataract, optic-nerve damage, corneal irregularity, and retinal disease need their own explanation.

Discuss the alternatives before picking a lens

RLE permanently removes the natural lens. Glasses, contacts, a corneal procedure, an implantable contact lens, or waiting may be worth discussing depending on the eyes. Being eligible for a procedure does not mean that its benefits outweigh its risks for you.

Ask: "Why is lens replacement preferable to the alternatives in my case?" Then ask what would make the surgeon recommend waiting. If you are highly nearsighted, include retinal risk in that discussion. The RLE risk guide provides background questions without replacing individual advice.

For the recommended lens, request its exact name, the target in each eye, expected remaining glasses use, and likely low-light tradeoffs. A lens category alone is not a personalized plan.

Leave with a written estimate and aftercare plan

Ask whether the quote is per eye or for both eyes and which items it includes: testing, facility fees, medications, follow-ups, and possible additional correction. Ask how long any additional-treatment policy lasts and what conditions apply. Financing eligibility and insurance decisions should be confirmed in writing.

Our RLE financing guide explains costs in more detail. This checklist helps you make two quotes comparable without treating the cheapest headline as the whole decision.

Patients coming from Dallas, Irving, or Fort Worth should also confirm the actual treatment location, possible repeat testing, transport needs after dilation, and where urgent concerns will be assessed. Visionary Eye's practice is in Plano; a service-area page does not mean there is a separate surgery office in each city.

Before making the decision

You should be able to explain the proposed benefit, the main personal risks, the likely glasses needs, and the follow-up commitment in your own words. Take unanswered questions back to the team. A consultation is a place to make an informed choice, including the choice to wait.

Use our RLE recovery planning guide to check the calendar and the RLE procedure page for the next step.
