What is lens replacement surgery

Replace the lens. Keep the vision.

The eye has a natural lens that focuses light onto the retina. Over time, that lens loses flexibility (making near vision harder) and can cloud (forming a cataract). Lens replacement surgery removes that aging or clouded lens and replaces it with a premium intraocular lens (IOL) calibrated to your specific vision goals.

The result is permanent, since the IOL never ages or clouds. Depending on the lens technology chosen, most patients achieve clear vision at distance, intermediate, and near — without daily glasses.

  • Permanent — IOL never clouds or ages
  • Precise biometry before every procedure
  • Distance + near + intermediate in one procedure
  • No future cataracts after lens is replaced

The two procedures

Two paths, one goal: clear vision.

CLR and Premium Cataract Surgery use the same core technology — a premium IOL — but differ in who they're for. The consultation determines which fits your eyes.

Lens exchange for ages 40+ — before cataracts form

Refractive Lens Exchange / Custom Lens Replacement

CLR replaces the eye's aging natural lens with a premium IOL — correcting distance, intermediate, and near vision in one permanent procedure. You'll never develop cataracts in that eye.

Best for: Ages 40+ with reading-glass dependence, halos, or early lens cloudiness

Advanced cataract removal with premium lens implantation

Premium Cataract Surgery

Removes a clouded lens and replaces it with an advanced IOL — restoring clarity and, for many patients, eliminating glasses for the first time. Image-guided, multifocal and toric options available.

Best for: Patients with cataracts affecting daily vision — typically ages 60+

Compare at a glance

CLR vs. Premium Cataract Surgery — side by side.

The biggest practical difference: Premium Cataract Surgery is insurance-covered when a cataract is the cause. CLR is an elective upgrade. The technology is essentially the same.

FAQ

Common questions.

Don't see your question? Call us at 214-972-2020 or book a free consultation.

  • What's the difference between CLR and Premium Cataract Surgery?
The core procedure is identical — remove the natural lens, implant a premium IOL. The difference is timing and insurance. CLR is done before a cataract forms (elective, not covered by insurance). Premium Cataract Surgery is done once the cataract is affecting your vision (the baseline removal is covered by Medicare/insurance; the premium lens upgrade is not). At your consultation, we'll tell you which you're a candidate for.
  • Will I need glasses after lens replacement?
Most patients choose a multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus IOL that provides good vision at distance, intermediate, and near. Some patients still use readers for very fine print in dim light. Your expectations are set during the consultation — we don't promise what your eyes can't deliver.
  • Is lens replacement permanent?
Yes. The IOL doesn't age, degrade, or cloud. Once placed, it's there for life. You will never develop a cataract in that eye.
  • How quickly does vision improve?
Most patients notice significant improvement within 24–48 hours. Full clarity and adaptation to the new lens typically takes 2–6 weeks depending on the IOL technology chosen.
  • Can both eyes be done at once?
We typically schedule eyes one to two weeks apart. This gives your first eye time to heal and allows us to fine-tune the second eye's plan based on the first result.
  • Is it covered by Medicare or insurance?
Standard cataract surgery is covered by Medicare and most private insurance when medically necessary. Premium IOL upgrades and CLR (done before a cataract forms) are elective and are not covered — but both qualify for FSA/HSA and Cherry financing.
