Glaucoma. The silent thief of sight.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve. Treatment lowers eye pressure, but the right plan depends on the pressure goal, optic-nerve findings, visual fields, drainage angle, and change over time.

Eye pressure damages the optic nerve long before vision changes.
Open-angle glaucoma often develops without noticeable early symptoms, and optic-nerve damage cannot be reversed. Pressure measurements, optic-nerve imaging, drainage-angle examination, and reliable visual fields help establish risk and show whether the disease is changing.
Treatment focuses on lowering eye pressure enough to protect the optic nerve. Depending on disease stage and anatomy, that may mean monitoring, eye drops, selective laser trabeculoplasty, sustained-release medication, MIGS, or referral for traditional glaucoma surgery.
What you may be noticing.
Often asymptomatic in early stages - diagnosed at routine eye exam
Gradual loss of peripheral vision (often unnoticed for years)
Tunnel vision in advanced stages
Eye pain, halos, or sudden vision changes (rare angle-closure type)
Increased risk if family history, age 60+, African or Asian heritage
Why it happens.
Elevated intraocular pressure (most common)
Genetic predisposition
Age - risk rises sharply after 60
Long-term steroid use
Eye injury or other eye conditions

The right answer depends on your eyes, your prescription, and your life. Here's what we typically recommend - but the only way to know what fits you is a comprehensive evaluation.
SLT laser treatment
A no-incision laser option for selected open-angle glaucoma or ocular-hypertension patients, with pressure response measured at follow-up.
MIGS - iStent
A pair of micro-stents placed in the eye's natural drainage pathway. Often combined with cataract surgery.
MIGS - Hydrus Microstent
A small scaffold that supports outflow through Schlemm's canal in selected open-angle glaucoma patients.
MIGS - Goniotomy
A bladeless opening of the trabecular meshwork - no implant required.
MIGS - Canaloplasty
A microcatheter procedure that restores the eye's natural drainage canal without a permanent implant.
MIGS - Durysta
A biodegradable bimatoprost implant that may reduce daily-drop burden for selected patients.
MIGS - iDose TR
An implantable platform that continuously delivers travoprost for selected open-angle glaucoma or ocular-hypertension patients.
Common questions.
Can MIGS replace my daily drops?
Some patients reduce their medication burden after MIGS, while others still need one or more drops. The result depends on starting pressure, target pressure, drainage anatomy, disease stage, cataract timing, and the procedure chosen. Will I go blind from glaucoma?
Glaucoma can cause permanent vision loss if it progresses, but timely diagnosis, pressure-lowering treatment, and reliable follow-up can reduce that risk. An individual prognosis depends on how advanced the disease is, the target pressure, and whether testing remains stable. Is glaucoma treatment covered by insurance?
Medically necessary glaucoma visits and treatments are commonly billed through medical insurance, but deductibles, copays, authorization rules, and coverage for a specific drug or procedure vary by plan. Benefits should be checked before treatment is scheduled.
