Does Insurance Cover LASIK? What You Need to Know

The short answer is: most health insurance plans do not cover LASIK. And I know that is not what you wanted to hear.

LASIK is classified as an elective procedure by the vast majority of insurance companies. That means it falls outside standard medical coverage, alongside things like cosmetic surgery. It does not matter that LASIK corrects a real medical condition. It does not matter that glasses and contacts are ongoing how much LASIK costs in Planos that often exceed the one-time cost of surgery. Insurance companies have decided it is elective, and that is the reality we work with.

The Exceptions

Some vision insurance plans, like VSP, offer discounts on LASIK at participating providers. These are typically not full coverage but can reduce the cost by a few hundred dollars per eye. It is worth checking your plan details or calling your vision insurance provider directly.

Certain employers and unions offer LASIK benefits or negotiated group rates. Military and federal employees sometimes have access to discounted vision correction programs. If you work for a large employer, check with your HR department. You might have a benefit you do not know about.

HSA and FSA: Your Best Tools

Health Savings Accounts and Flexible Spending Accounts are the most practical way to reduce your out-of-pocket cost for LASIK. Both HSA and FSA funds can be used for LASIK because it qualifies as a medical expense under IRS guidelines.

If you have an HSA or FSA, you are paying for LASIK with pre-tax dollars. Depending on your tax bracket, that can save you 20 to 35 percent on the effective cost. If you are planning ahead, you can contribute to your HSA or FSA in the months before your procedure to build up the balance.

Financing at Visionary Eye

We offer interest-free financing options because we believe cost should not be the reason someone lives with blurry vision. Monthly payments can make LASIK more accessible than a year of contact lenses and solution.

Think about it this way. If you spend $50 a month on contacts and solution, that is $600 a year. Over ten years, that is $6,000, and you still need contacts at the end. LASIK is a one-time investment that pays for itself.
