Keratoconus. When the cornea progressively thins.
Keratoconus is a progressive condition that warps the cornea over time. Corneal cross-linking is the only treatment that halts the progression - and the earlier it's caught, the more options remain on the table.

The cornea thins and bulges into an irregular cone shape.
In keratoconus, weakening collagen fibers cause the cornea to gradually lose its smooth dome shape and bulge outward into an irregular cone. The result is increasing astigmatism, blurry vision, and corrections that get harder to dial in with glasses or contact lenses.
Corneal cross-linking (CXL) uses riboflavin and UV light to create new chemical bonds that stiffen the cornea - halting progression. The earlier we catch keratoconus and stabilize it, the more vision-correction options remain open later.

The right answer depends on your eyes, your prescription, and your life. Here's what we typically recommend - but the only way to know what fits you is a comprehensive evaluation.
Common questions.
Will CXL improve my vision?
CXL primarily stabilizes the cornea - preventing further worsening. Some patients see modest improvement over time, but the main benefit is preserving the vision and surgical options you have today. Can I have LASIK if I have keratoconus?
Generally no - LASIK can accelerate progression in keratoconic eyes. But once we stabilize the cornea with CXL and document stability for 12+ months, some patients can safely pursue laser correction. Is CXL covered by insurance?
Many insurance plans now cover CXL for keratoconus. We verify benefits during your evaluation and walk you through any out-of-pocket costs.
